Q. How do I choose the right boat?
A. Be honest with what you want the boat to do, then call us.
Some boats can do a few things well, other boats were designed for specific missions.
We will talk you through your needs from one person, to racing, family boats and recreation.
Q. New vs. Used?
A. Depends on the needs of the boat, but we are honest and direct when we feel a used boat might be better than new.
We activelly stock or sell on consignment used small sailboats as well. View our
Used Boat listings.
Q. Do new boats have a warranty?
A. Almost all of them. Length and conditions vary, but generally a warranty from any defects or leakages for 1-2 years.
Q. Are there colors to choose on new boats?
A. Colors vary from model year to year. Fiberglass boats often have two colors to choose from.
Q. What 'up keep' will be required?
A. Plastic/Polyethelene boats are almost maintinence free.
Fibgerglass boats require a bit more care, but not much.
Lines will need to be replaced every 5-6 years. Sails maybe 5-10 years depending on use.
Q. What items will be useful with my boat?
A.
Boat Covers - Keep the boat clean and dry
Dolly/Trailer - Launch the boat on a beach or tow it on the road
Apparel - Lifejackets to splash tops and sailing boots
Q. Do you offer Sailing Lessons?
A. West Coast Sailing doesn't, , but there are many local places to do so. Some local favorites are:
In Oregon,
Willamette Sailing SchoolIn Washington,
Sail Sand Point
Q. What the best sailing locations?
A. We are lucky to have a multitude in the Northwest
(We're working on a comprehensive sailing guide for the Northwest)
Q. What is a timeline for rigging the boat and getting sailing?
A. This is an important aspect to consider when buying a boat.
Some boats take 5 minutes, others 25-30 to be on the water. Generally speaking, unless you can leave the mast up and the boat on a dock or dolly, the less time it takes from trailer to sailing, the more you will actually sail.
Q. Do you sell trailers or can I car top?
A. A majority of our boats are easily carried on top of a car.
Q. Do you Finance boat purchases
A. We do not do the financing in house, but we work with Wells Fargo when a customer wishes to finance a new boat.
Q. Do you take trade-ins?
A. On popular models we do! Lasers, V-15, Optis and some others we offer 85% trade in value towards a new boat.
Q. Timing and availability of boats?
A. We have a 7000 sq ft warehouse full of boats. Our most popular models are always in stock, often in quantity.
If we have to order a boat, or a specific color not in stock, the wait is usually no more than 5 weeks at the very worst.
Tasars and any boat built to customer specifications run about 6 weeks from order till delivery.
Q. How well do boats hold their value?
A. Boats with strong classes hold thier value very well. Even recreational boats do not depreciate at the rates most consumers expect from experiences with cars and similar objects. Compare our listings on the Used Boats page for an up-to-date view of how boats hold value.
Q. Do you support the boats you sell with original Parts?
A. Absolutely, it's a big part of what makes us unique, our specific small sailboat inventory and knowledge.
Q. What boats are good for 1 or 2 people?
A. See
our boats section for a breakdown.
Q. Where can I demo the boats?
A. Because we are not on the water, we do not demo boats actively. Our local sailing clubs are full of the boats we sell, and we can often connect customers with other owners so they can collect information from many sources :)
