AMBASSADOR PROGRAM
Based on our criteria of not only sailing skills, but also sportsmanship, a strong sailing resume, and goals for the future, we have selected three amazing sailors to represent West Coast Sailing in 2012. Here is a little more on each sailor:
Hanne Weaver (Left):
1. Age when you started sailing: It was in 2003, I was 8 years old, I started sailing but I didn’t start racing until age 9 and then I raced after my brother.
2. First boat sailed: Optimist- my first boat was the North Sail boat, then Lindsay Buchan’s old pink boat which I called “Magical Dreamer”
3. Favorite place to sail: Miami, Florida is my favorite because the weather and water is so much warmer than here in Seattle. The best part is seeing Sea Turtles swimming around while you sail.
4. Favorite regatta: The Junior Women’s Single Handed Championship. This regatta is held in different places in the US, a variety of college coaches are there to teach you and where I meet new sailors and make friends from all around the United States.
5. Home club: I am a member of the Seattle Yacht Club. I sail out of Shilshole Bay Marina, Seattle, Washington.
6. Favorite piece of sailing apparel: My favorite sailing clothing is my SEA rash guard. I like it because it is so comfortable, flexible and it keeps me warm.
Isabella Bertold (Center):
1. Age when you started sailing: I was five years old
2. First boat sailed: Optimist Dinghy!
3. Favorite place to sail: Buzios, Brazil
4. Favorite regatta: Well it was ISAF Youth Worlds, but I guess I’ve been to old for that one for a couple years now, so I’ll go with the Miami Olympic Classes Regatta.
5. Home club: Royal Vancouver Yacht Club
6. Favorite piece of sailing apparel: Zhik Super Warm Suit
Sean Kelly (Left):
1. Age when you started sailing: I started sailing at the ripe young age of 11.
2.First boat sailed I learned how to sail in a boat called an El Toro. The El Toro was the pram primarily sailed in the Bay Area about 10 years ago.
3. Favorite place to sail: My favorite place to sail is most definitely the Colombia River Gorge. You can sail in perfect 10-15 in the morning, and then transition to 20-30 by the afternoon.
4. Favorite regatta: The 2009 Laser Worlds in Halifax, Nova Scotia
5. Home club: St. Francis Yacht Club
6. Favorite piece of sailing apparel: My Sea full length hiking pants. They keep me warm on the coldest San Francisco days, and always fit excellent.
